If you’re travelling through the heart of the South Australian Mallee and looking for a place to stretch your legs and let the kids burn some energy then a pit-stop along the Mallee Playground Trail is a no-brainer!
This community-led initiative has revitalised and connected open space reserves in three local towns – Wynarka, Karoonda and Wanbi – to become the first of its kind in the region.
Karoonda Playground
Blast off into a new adventure at Karoonda’s space-themed playground. Inspired by the Karoonda Meteorite, the playground boasts the only three-level (10 metre high) summit tower in South Australia. With two tunnel slides (the ‘blackholes’), a lunar rover buggy, ‘space tether’ flying fox, orbiting carousel, stargazing hammock and a water play area, it’s the ultimate place to play.
Wanbi Playground
For nature-based play, explore the Wanbi Soldiers Memorial Playground. Developed in partnership by the local Youth Action Committee and local residents, this play space incorporates natural toned traditional play equipment with other natural elements for a unique play experience.
An accessible public toilet has also been installed within the reserve, and there’s a shelter area, making it a family friendly destination right on the Karoonda Highway.
Wynarka Playground
The Wynarka Playground was redeveloped with refurbished play equipment installed in a partnership between the District Council of Karoonda East Murray and the Wynarka Recreation Reserve Committee.
