The Lower Lakes are shallow and great for any style of paddling (or on the blowy days, they’re popular for wind and kite-surfing too). Peddle power The Encounter Bikeway begins along the Murray River in Goolwa and takes you along the river’s edge to the barrage. You’ll pedal under the Hindmarsh Bridge and through the wharf precinct. Renowned for its cycling culture, Goolwa cafés will welcome cyclists. The 300km Murray to Clare Trail takes you on a scenic route via Monarto on dirt roads and tracks (this trail is not sign-posted, so plan your trip ahead). Anything goes Parts of the 450km Murray Coorong Trail are now open. This walking and mountain bike trail offers incredible views of the river, Lower Lakes and Coorong. Sections of between 2 -20km will take you along various surfaces, across the ferry at Mannum, through pine forests near Tailem Bend, along Sturt Reserve in Murray Bridge and from Meningie to the Coorong’s edge. Shorter trails include the Tailem Bend History Trail or Murray Bridge Discovery Trail. For riverside views and native wildlife, try the Pelican Path in Meningie, Swanport and Rocky Gully Wetlands in Murray Bridge, or the Goolwa Barrage walk to the Murray Mouth. Our environment makes for trail season all-year- round, so pack your walking shoes.
